With summer vacation approaching, the Department of Environmental Protection of the Taoyuan City Government (TYDEP) has launched its 2026 Xinwu Kejian Stone Weir Repair Summer Camp for elementary school students. The program invites local students to explore the Xinwu coastline through cultural experiences, hands-on craftsmanship, and coastal farming. The camp consists of five free single-day sessions, each limited to 30 participants.

Since its launch last year, the summer camp has been highly popular among students and parents, with spots filling up almost instantly. Centered on hands-on exploration, the curriculum covers stone weir history, traditional fishing mechanics, repair techniques, coastal food culture, and local fishing village life. Under professional guidance, students will explore intertidal environments and coastal ecology, experiencing tidal fishing through ancestral wisdom.

The Xinwu Kejian Stone Weirs are a precious cultural heritage site and among the few well-preserved traditional stone weir clusters in northern Taiwan. To pass down this coastal heritage, the city invited the Taoyuan Stone Weir Association, a government-certified cultural preservation group, to lead the camp. Through a learning-by-doing approach, instructors will introduce the cultural value and engineering techniques of the stone weirs.

TYDEP emphasized that stone weirs embody the spirit of marine resource sustainability. By blending cultural preservation with environmental education, the camp aims to foster a deep appreciation for marine ecology and natural resources. The initiative also aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through its collaboration with local groups to promote heritage preservation and eco-education.

Registration opens at 10:00 AM on June 17. Residents can access event details via the Taoyuan Citizen Card APP or the TYDEP Facebook fan page. For inquiries, please contact 02-2702-0922 ext. 602. With limited slots available, students are encouraged to register early to explore the charm of Taoyuan’s coastal culture.
