The Department of Environmental Protection of the Taoyuan City Government (TYDEP) has once again received national recognition for its internationally acclaimed “AI Environmental Pollution Identification System,” which stood out among 147 entries to win the National Sustainable Development Award in the government agency category. The award ceremony was held on December 8 by the National Council for Sustainable Development under the Executive Yuan, with TYDEP Director-General Yen Chi-Liang accepting the honor on behalf of the Taoyuan City Government. Widely regarded as one of the highest distinctions in the field of sustainable governance, the award underscores Taoyuan’s role as a national benchmark for smart environmental management.
Director-General Yen stated that the AI Environmental Pollution Identification System has become a cornerstone of Taoyuan’s smart environmental governance framework. By leveraging advanced technologies, the system has significantly improved inspection efficiency and enabled environmental management to evolve from reactive responses to proactive monitoring. With an overall identification accuracy exceeding 80% and increased inspection efficiency of more than 55%, the system has reduced various types of environmental complaints. Covering issues such as construction dust, river water color changes, water pollution, and illegal vehicle modifications, the system integrates image recognition, Internet of Things (IoT) technology, and cloud-based analytics to establish a cross-domain environmental monitoring model that enhances both the timeliness and precision of municipal environmental governance.
TYDEP noted that the system’s recognition at this year’s National Sustainable Development Award reflects the City Government’s sustained commitment to smart governance and sustainability. Since its implementation, the system has substantially improved inspection efficiency and reduced environmental complaints. It is also linked to cross-departmental platforms, establishing alert and reporting mechanisms that deliver real-time notifications through channels such as LINE, thereby enhancing administrative efficiency and information transparency.
According to TYDEP, the AI Environmental Pollution Identification System has received widespread recognition both domestically and internationally in recent years. Its accolades include the 2024 ASOCIO DX Award (Public Sector Category – HealthTech Award, Gold), the 2024 WITSA ICT Excellence Award (Sustainable Growth and Circular Economy, Gold), the 2025 Green Apple Environment Award (Gold) in the UK, the Smart 50 Awards, the Taiwan and Asia-Pacific Sustainability Awards (Gold), the Taiwan Action Awards (Gold and Silver), and the GO SMART Award, among others.
TYDEP emphasized that the City Government will continue to expand the application of AI technologies across various areas, including air quality, water quality, and urban environmental management. It will further strengthen cross-departmental data integration and collaboration among government, industry, academia, and research institutions to build a sustainable governance model based on public-private partnerships. Building on this latest recognition, Taoyuan will continue enhancing its environmental monitoring capabilities and advance toward its vision of a sustainable, livable, and resilient smart city.
