To promote food waste reduction and encourage mindful consumption, the Department of Environmental Protection of the Taoyuan City Government (TYDEP) has launched the third annual “Cherish Food Chef” competition. Open for submissions now until 12 p.m. on May 27, the competition features two categories—Individual and Group—with a top prize of NT$50,000. The event invites food lovers from both Taoyuan and beyond to showcase their passion for sustainable cooking. The selection process includes two rounds: a written application review followed by an on-site competition. Finalists will compete in person on July 15 at Chien Hsin University of Science and Technology. Full event details and registration information are available on the official Ministry of Environment website.
TYDEP Director Yan Ji-Liang noted that Taoyuan produces approximately 45,000 metric tons of food waste annually, resulting in around 15,300 metric tons of carbon emissions (based on 0.34 kg CO₂e per kilogram of food waste). In an effort to lower emissions and reduce food waste, the city has implemented low-carbon instructions and worship guidelines in recent years. The Taiyuan City Government encourages residents to take everyday actions such as reducing food waste, choosing locally sourced ingredients, avoiding unnecessary packaging, and using reusable shopping bags instead of plastic ones. These simple habits can help shape a more sustainable future and protect the environment.
Director Yan noted that this year’s competition includes two categories: the Recipe Challenge and the Lesson Plan Design. The Recipe Challenge is open to individual applicants, who must submit at least two recipes based on designated ingredients, demonstrating the principles of food conservation. The Lesson Plan Design category is open to individuals or teams of up to three members. Participants are required to create two to four class sessions focused on food-saving themes, incorporating diverse actions and teaching strategies. Additionally, to strengthen local ties, TYDEP is providing locally sourced ingredients from Taoyuan. Participants are encouraged to use regional produce and prepare dishes with low-carbon cooking methods. The event aims not only to foster creativity and community engagement, but also to inspire a broader public commitment to sustainable food practices and waste reduction.
TYDEP added that the final round of the competition will take place on July 15, 2025, with awards going to the top five participants in each category. First-place winners will go on to represent Taoyuan in the northern regional finals and the national competition. Interested participants can register online at www.cherishfood.com.tw or contact the competition team at (03) 228-9927.
