The Taoyuan City Government has launched a free asbestos waste collection program to ensure the health and safety of its residents. Managed by the Office of Coast and Resource Circulation Construction (OCRCC), the program aims to assist citizens in safely disposing of asbestos-containing construction materials. Following a high number of applications in 2023, which resulted in the removal of 150 tons of asbestos waste, the OCRCC has once again applied for a central government subsidy and opened the application process to the public on February 5. As long as residents apply before October 31 of this year (or until the application limit is reached) and meet the eligibility criteria—residential homes, personal agricultural facilities, temples, and churches—the office will offer free asbestos waste collection services. Applicants will not be required to pay any fees, significantly reducing their burden of handling hazardous asbestos waste.
Asbestos was commonly used in construction materials such as roof tiles, corrugated cement sheets, lightweight steel ceiling tiles, and awnings, typically in gray, wavy forms. Known for its heat resistance, durability, and soundproofing properties, it was widely used in fireproof materials during the 1970s and 1980s. Although the use of asbestos was fully banned in 2006, many households still have asbestos materials in their buildings. It poses health risks to people, as they may inhale asbestos fibers during demolition.
The OCRCC emphasizes that the free service only covers waste removal and does not include demolition. Residents will need to hire professionals for the demolition and proper packaging of the asbestos waste, following safety regulations. Protective measures should be taken during demolition, and asbestos waste should never be discarded in random places.
