On the 17th, the Department of Environmental Protection of the Taoyuan City Government (TYDEP), in collaboration with the Green Energy Chemical Disaster Response Team from the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), conducted a hazardous chemical disaster simulation exercise at the Environmental Protection Administration Campus. By integrating AR (Augmented Reality), VR (Virtual Reality), and DRTSM (Digital Reality Tactical Simulation Management) systems, the training aimed to enhance frontline personnel’s disaster response skills, improve on-site emergency response capabilities, and ensure sufficient preparedness for managing toxic chemical incidents, thus safeguarding the quality of life for residents.
Taoyuan, with an industrial output of NT$4.8 trillion, is Taiwan’s leading industrial hub, featuring a high number and variety of factories. In the past, incidents involving chemical or environmental hazards have significantly impacted the living environment of residents. Under Mayor Chang San-cheng’s directive to incorporate AI technologies in city governance, TYDEP has actively partnered with ITRI’s research team to introduce AR, VR, and the DRTSM system. These cutting-edge technologies allow TYDEP personnel to immerse themselves in simulated chemical disaster scenarios, enhancing their disaster prevention and response training and strengthening overall readiness.
Director-General Chen Shih-wei of the TYDEP stated that AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality) technologies offer innovative simulation training tools. Previously, many complex cases could not be effectively replicated in training drills. However, with AR/VR systems, realistic disaster scenarios can now be created, providing an immersive experience of chemical disaster incidents. This training enables frontline disaster response managers and personnel to practice emergency response measures and learn how to minimize disaster impacts in real-time.
TYDEP noted that trainees use these simulations to immediately assess disaster and pollution sites, develop action plans, organize response teams, coordinate support, conduct detection operations, and report on post-incident management. This training not only enhances personal safety during duties but also drills techniques to prevent severe environmental contamination and damage. Moving forward, TYDEP will continue collaborating with ITRI and other expert teams to advance technologies in disaster response and environmental quality monitoring, further enhancing Taoyuan’s capabilities in managing hazardous chemical emergencies.
