On the 21st, the Department of Environmental Protection of the Taoyuan City Government (TYDEP) hosted the "2024 Taoyuan Environmental Knowledge Competition" at Yuan Ze University, attracting over 300 participants from across the region. The top five winners in each category will receive prizes ranging from NT$2,000 to NT$10,000 in vouchers and will represent Taoyuan City in the national finals, vying for further glory.
TYDEP Director-General Chen Shih-wei noted that this year's competition covered a wide range of environmental topics, including policies, climate change, and sustainable development, thoroughly testing participants' knowledge and practical skills in addressing modern environmental challenges. Contestants needed to stay abreast of current environmental news, understand the latest developments and challenges in the field, and delve into regulations, books, and research papers. The preparation was no small feat given the broad scope of the topics. Notably, some participants have been competing for several years. For instance, a Taoyuan Senior High School student Tsai Shang-ting and his father have been competing together for five years, progressing from the elementary to junior high and now to the high school division, demonstrating their dedication to learning about environmental issues. Additionally, contestant Huang Po-jui has participated in the adults category for seven consecutive years, showcasing continuous improvement and a profound commitment to environmental topics.
The TYDEP announced the winners for each group: Chen Tze-kai from Long-An Elementary School, Yu Tsung-yen from Fu Feng Junior High School, Tsai Shang-ting from Taoyuan Senior High School, and Huang Po-jui from the adults category. Achieving top-five honors was no easy feat, requiring participants to pass multiple stages. In the first round, a written test selected the top 10 contestants, with ties leading to a second round of rapid-response questions, testing not only preparation but also accuracy under time constraints. These outstanding participants will represent Taoyuan in the national finals on November 16 at Feng Chia University, and the TYDEP hopes they will showcase their talents and bring glory home to Taoyuan City.
