To safeguard public health, the Taoyuan Department of Environmental Protection (TYDEP) has pioneered the "Motorcycle Vehicle Smart Detection and Recognition System," which employs optical remote sensing technology to analyze motorcycle exhaust concentrations within 10 seconds. The system leverages an AI-powered license plate recognition system combined with a cloud database to swiftly identify motorcycles with high pollution potential. It is estimated that this system can reduce idle carbon emissions by 694 kgCO2e annually, as well as decrease carbon monoxide emissions by 12.7 metric tons and hydrocarbon emissions by 4.1 metric tons from motorcycles.
According to the TYDEP, there are a total of 1.26 million fuel motorcycles in the city. In line with the city government's "Smart Taoyuan" policy and effective management of motorcycle emissions, the TYDEP collaborated with the Industrial Technology Research Institute to pioneer the nation's first "Motorcycle Vehicle Smart Detection and Recognition System." This system utilizes image recognition and optical detection technology to rapidly assess motorcycle exhaust emissions. It only takes an average of 10 seconds for pollution detection per motorcycle, a significant improvement compared to the traditional manual detection time of 3 to 5 minutes, increasing efficiency by nearly 60 times. Currently, the system operates for approximately 8 hours per day, screening around 500 motorcycles, a tenfold increase in efficiency compared to traditional daily screenings of about 50 motorcycles, thus enhancing overall effectiveness.
This technology has been officially deployed since March 2024, and as of the end of April, nearly 2,000 detections have been completed. The TYDEP also noted that all inspection equipment of the "Motorcycle Vehicle Smart Detection and Recognition System" is powered by solar energy, reducing the annual consumption of approximately 250 liters of fuel. This system was also honored with the Taoyuan City Government Innovation Award this year, showcasing its remarkable effectiveness.
The TYDEP emphasizes that in managing vehicle emissions, besides actively promoting the use of public transportation and advocating for low-emission vehicles, efforts are also being made to strengthen regular inspections and enforcement operations for motorcycle emissions to control pollution. Members of the public are urged to cultivate the habit of undergoing annual emission inspections and regular vehicle maintenance. Every year, during the month before and after the vehicle registration month, vehicle owners are encouraged to visit motorcycle inspection stations for emissions inspections. This not only enhances driving/riding quality and reduces fuel consumption but also decreases pollution emissions.
