To encourage the public to place more emphasis on Taoyuan’s local features and environmental issues through environmental pictures books, the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Taoyuan announced today (3rd) the “2024 Taoyuan City Picture Book on Environmental Protection” competition. The aim of the competition is for members of the public to create vivid picture books on the environment and environmental issues. By combining Taoyuan’s local features and environmental education, DEP Taoyuan is committed to conveying the importance of environmental conservation to the community. This will also steer people’s interest in sustainable development, making an effort to do our part for the planet.

The competition is divided into three groups: the “Parent and Child Creation Group,” the “Youth Creation Group” and the “Social Creation Group.” For the “Parent and Child Creation Group” - the main competitor must be a third grade student between elementary school and the third grade of a junior high school, with a parent as a co-creator. For the “Youth Creation Group” - the main competitor must be a student between senior high school or vocational school and a post-graduate of a university/college (excluding post-graduate students who are working). For the “Social Creation Group” - competitors can be anyone other than the previous two groups. The theme of this competition is centered on issues in Taoyuan, zero-carbon life and climate change. To create a picture, competitors have the option to pick one theme or a combination of multiple themes and should incorporate Taoyuan’s humanities, the environment and other local characteristics into their work along with their creativity and imagination. Competitors can submit their work between May 6 and June 14. First place in each group will win NT$50,000.

According to the DEP Taoyuan, the winning works will be published by means of e-book and video on the Taoyuan Environmental Education Global Information website. Physical picture books will also be published and made available to the public at the Taoyuan Public Library and National Central Library. This year, DEP Taoyuan continues to organize the environmental education illustrated storytelling program. With picture books on environmental protection, coupled with lively storytelling, the concepts of environmental education can be rooted into the minds of the younger generation, enabling them to care for and understand more about the environment.

Through picture books, environmental issues and challenges are presented to the readers to spark their mindsets regarding the environment, enabling them to develop an environmentally friendly attitude. By doing this, the public will be willing to exercise environmental actions in their daily life, so that ideas about environmental protection are implemented in every corner of society. Find out more about the program at the Taoyuan Environmental Education Global Information website (https://tydep-eew.com.tw/), where you can download an application form for the competition. We welcome those passionate about the creation of environmental education picture books to take part in this competition
