The Ministry of Environment hosted the “2022 Green Procurement and Green Consumption Promotion Excellence Awards” on December 13, honoring outstanding agencies and private enterprises nationwide for their excellent performance in green procurement. Taoyuan City Government has been awarded the “Outstanding Evaluated Green Procurement Agency” for 11 consecutive years. Not only did the city government achieve outstanding evaluation results, but also scored full marks, making it one of only 11 government agencies nationwide to receive this prestigious honor!
Taoyuan is actively promoting its net-zero goal, realizing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and encourages green consumption within the city, embodying SDG 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production. Each department of the city government and respective district offices are leading by example through the implementation of green procurement practices, prioritizing the purchase of eco-label and green products. This motivates local businesses to collectively drive green consumption, ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns, thus becoming a critical foundation for Taoyuan City's advancement of a green economy. Last year, the total amount for green procurement by the Taoyuan City Government and its affiliated agencies reached NT$650 million. Not only did they achieve a perfect score for three consecutive years, but the attainment rate for designated eco-label product procurement has also maintained 100% for three consecutive years, securing the highest distinction rating.
The Taoyuan Department of Environmental Protection (TYDEP) stated that promoting green procurement and encouraging the prioritization of environmentally friendly green products not only expands Taoyuan City's capacity for green consumption but also encourages companies to invest more effort in producing environmentally friendly goods. By using economic incentives to drive environmental protection, this approach ensures a mutually beneficial relationship between economic development and environmental conservation. Estimations of Taoyuan City Government's green procurement initiatives in 2022 reveal that the procurement and use of environmentally friendly products (including office paper, sanitary paper, consumer electronic products, home appliances, etc.) collectively reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 2,285 tCO2e. This effort saved 4.33 million kWh of electricity, conserved 1,583 metric tons of water, and prevented the felling of 532,194 trees. Not only does this effectively reduce carbon dioxide emissions, but it also significantly contributes to and benefits environmental conservation efforts.
Taoyuan City is fully committed to advancing environmental sustainability. Through the implementation of green consumption practices, the city explores opportunities in the green market. Encouraging all city-affiliated departments and agencies to prioritize the procurement of eco-labeled goods not only drives the city's green economy but also collaborates with private enterprises and green service industries. Together, they promote and advocate for a net-zero green lifestyle, encouraging more residents to engage in green consumption to support environmental policies. This collective effort aims to enhance environmental quality and propel the city towards becoming a net-zero city committed to sustainable development.
