With the increasing prevalence of 5G networks and in response to the global trend of smart environmental protection, the Environmental Protection Administration of the Executive Yuan (EPA) has actively promoted smart applications of digital technology to environmental protection issues in recent years and established a remote monitoring and management platform. The measures seek to monitor and manage environmental cleaning vehicles through smart technology. The first wave of the installation of high-tech monitoring equipment by the Department of Environmental Protection of the Taoyuan City Government (TYDEP) as part of the preliminary trial phase, in the hope of further integration with environmental protection vehicles and disposal information to improve the overall efficiency of environmental cleanup operations.

The TYDEP and the EPA jointly held the "Introduction of Smart Remote Monitoring and Management Platform for Garbage Collection and Disposal Vehicles and Autonomous Environmental Cleaning Vehicles" technology research and exchange seminar and results presentation at the Hutoushan Innovation Park in Taoyuan City on the 23rd. Representatives from the environmental protection bureaus of various county and municipal governments and the industry were invited to share their views on the application of emerging technologies such as IoT technology to environmental protection issues. In addition, through the results presentation of the smart remote monitoring and management platform for garbage collection and disposal vehicles, the seminar saw active exchanges between environmental protection bureaus of various local governments to promote the policy and technology and expand the vision of smart environmental protection in Taiwan.

The EPA stated said that in order to promote the smartization of garbage collection and disposal vehicle V2X systems, it is currently cooperating with the TYDEP to complete the installation of a number of technological auxiliary devices for key environmental protection vehicles, such as garbage trucks, recycling trucks and food waste trucks. This includes the installation of driver assistance systems, driver detection systems, vehicle diagnostic systems, V2X host and monitoring auxiliary systems in the vehicle, which allows fleet managers to have complete control of the vehicle's real-time operating status at the back end. In addition, a 360-degree panoramic system and blind spot detection system are installed on the outside of vehicles, which can also actively identify the location of the garbage truck's rear cleaning staff to achieve rear loader and compactor safety alerts and enhance the safety and efficiency of environmental cleaning operations. A live demonstration of the installation of hi-tech auxiliary devices was also demonstrated on site today on environmental protection vehicles in Taoyuan City, as well as an introduction to the operations of the remote monitoring and management platform.

The TYDEP also said that the EPA's development of a remote monitoring and management platform for environmental protection vehicles can standardize data on the GPS records of environmental cleanup vehicles and related real-time information on vehicle safety technology monitoring. This allows for real-time feedback and monitoring of all dynamic vehicular information for on-duty vehicles, including vehicle condition monitoring, driver attendance, event alarms and video feeds, as well as extended driver safety behavior analysis and production of various data charts. This assists the management team of the environmental protection bureaus to monitor the managed vehicles remotely. With the smooth operations of this trial run, more vehicles will be planned to be equipped with technology monitoring equipment in the future. Hardware and software of the monitoring centers shall also be upgraded and integrated with information of each environmental protection facility through 5G technology to facilitate the monitoring and control at any time, thus realizing the future vision of harnessing the power of smart technology in environmental cleaning and maintenance work.
